At Boronia we work hard to mirror the responsibilities faced by women in everyday life and this philosophy supports strong family connections. The restoration, maintenance and support of family relationships is considered essential to the well-being of the women in our care including our grandparents. The importance of these family relationships is supported and encouraged for the benefit of the residents, their families, and the wider community.
The activities delivered through our parenting program provide our resident grandmothers a rare opportunity to share some special time with their grandchildren within a prison environment. The delivery of engaging child type activities and programs support Boronia’s philosophy around the importance of family relationships.
The July school holiday program ensured the resident grandmothers could spend some quality time with their grandchildren, at an event that was full of fun and enjoyment, offering numerous benefits for both the grandmother and her grandchildren. The party was a particular success and gave the women an opportunity to participate in some “normal” activities with their grandchildren, despite being in a prison environment. The jungle safari allowed the women and their grandchildren to strengthen emotional bonds, foster positive communication, boost self-esteem, and promote positive behaviours.
The entertainers really did an amazing job engaging the children in the various games and activities.
